Where do you find inspiration?

I’m typing this as I watch In Search of Darkness, which is a documentary on 80’s horror movies that runs 4.5 hours. It’s the first in a trilogy that dives into the decade of horror.

About an hour into it, I started thinking about how much inspiration I’ve drawn from horror. Here’s my obligatory mention that I did start a Stephen King podcast. It ultimately led me to dive into horror more than ever before.

So first, I was inspired to start a podcast so that I would actually read all of Stephen King’s novels and then that led to me wanting to dive into a wider variety of horror in books, TV, and film.

I’m one of those people who constantly has ideas, most of which go nowhere, but that’s not the point. I’m not stashing podcast ideas in a notes app without a reason. Will I use all of the ideas? Nope! But you have to have a lot of ideas in order to find the one that’s worth making.

A lot of these ideas come to me when I’m not interacting with podcasts at all. It’s almost always when I’m watching or reading something. So it’s important for me to make sure I’m taking in different types of media in order to keep the ideas coming.

Going for walks usually helps, too. There’s a great article on why that is in The New Yorker that I recommend giving a read.

So if you’re feeling stuck with ideas for your podcast, take a walk if you can or just go consume a different type of media and you never know what ideas will spark.

I’d love to hear about where you find inspiration, so feel free to hit reply and share!
