Why you need a podcast trailer

When I first started podcasting, I knew next to nothing other than the fact that I liked listening to podcasts and knew my way around a DAW enough to figure out how to record one. However, I had no idea that all podcast should have a trailer.

The main reason I typically give people is that it makes it easier to populate your RSS feed and ensure that you first full episode will go up the day you’re actually expecting it to. I tell everyone to post their trailer at least a week ahead of the launch date they want. This gives you time to submit it to Apple, Spotify, Google, etc. so you’re showing up in all of the podcast apps before episode one drops.

What I never really though about until more recently, is the fact that new listeners might want to check out a trailer even if you’re 50 episodes in. Below, Arielle Nissenblatt does a great job of explaining that so you should just check out the video in the tweet.

That said, you can - and probably should - change your trailer down the line if your show ends up having some big changes. Is there a new co-host? Make a new trailer with them so you’re giving potential listeners a more accurate look at what the most recent episodes will be like.
