Make some podcast friends!

Collaborating helps your show

One of the best things I ever did for Chat Sematary (my Stephen King podcast) was inviting other podcasters on the show. From the start, each episode was always myself and a guest, but the guests just happened to be the same 5-7 friends who also enjoyed King.

However, as I became more active on Twitter, I met other podcasters through the platform and slowly started inviting other horror podcasters on the show. It wasn’t immediate, but after doing that enough times, I did see an increase in downloads because those guests would share the show with their audience. And their audiences were already likely to love horror.

Mind you, it took me 50+ episodes to figure this out and work up the courage to start asking people to be on the show. Every once in a while I got a no, which as it turns out, is not the end of the world! Any time I got a no, the person was nice about it.

Don’t force it though if your show isn’t one that lends itself to having guests. Instead, make friends with podcasters who have similar shows and consider doing something like a promo swap. That can either be promoting each other’s shows on social media or doing in-episode ad reads for each other. Then, toss a link in your show notes to direct listeners to the show.

Even if it’s not entirely about promotion, I’ve found it helpful to have friends who either have their own podcasts or work on other people’s podcasts. Frankly, it’s nice to have people to talk to who can share in your experience of creating a podcast. I’ve had plenty of times where I’ve said something to a friend about podcasting and received a blank stare in return.

Anyway, this was just a quick one today to emphasize the importance of befriending fellow podcasters. I promise it’ll improve your podcasting journey.

And as always, if you need any help with your podcast, feel free to reach out!
