Hello! My name is Deanna and I help people create great podcasts. Every Sunday I'm sharing one tactical tip to make a killer podcast. So let’s get into it!
Since today is the day of Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics are ongoing, I want to highlight a sports podcast that is taking a different approach to sports.

Casuals with Katie Nolan is a sports podcast for people who are interested in sports, but aren’t die hard fans. You might not have a favorite team in a particular sport, but maybe you enjoy watching games with family or friends.
Or if you’re anything like the show’s producer Isabella, you know next to nothing about a sport like football and go on to be a fantasy football champion in your first year of playing.
For those who don’t know, Katie Nolan previously hosted a TV show called Garbage Time and had a podcast called Sports? with Katie Nolan. So she’s a seasoned sports media person who could absolutely make a show for the die hard fans. But I love that she’s not because I also think she’s one of the more accessible sports media personalities out there.
So often now, we get former players hosting podcasts, doing in-game commentary and halftime commentary, and frankly, they aren’t all that interesting (or as funny as they think they are).
I'll also point out that as a petty sports fan who loves the Los Angeles Lakers, I’m recommending you someone who is a die hard Boston sports fan all around. So considering the Boston Celtics are my mortal enemies, it says a lot that I’m making this recommendation.
Katie’s been on Radio Row at the Super Bowl for the last week and has had on a slew of guests from the sports world and it’s been fun getting to hear how she manages the 5-10 minutes she has with each of the guests. Radio Row seems hectic, but she’s making it digestible for the listeners in a fun way.
Even as someone who is a die hard fan, I find it highly entertaining because there’s not really any other sports podcast around. There’s one big lesson that we can all take from it: It’s important to do what other shows aren’t doing, especially in such a crowded field.
So if you ever want to start a podcast that’s about sports, movies, or even politics, go listen to what a bunch of shows are doing in your chosen category and then don’t just go do what they’re doing. Do what they aren’t. That’s going to be how you differentiate yourself.
