Always Improve Your Craft
Keep learning!
I was one of those kids who didn’t love school, and the irony of it is that I love learning now. Once I hit college and was studying something I was actually interested in (music industry), it was much easier for me to dig in and want to learn new things.
The same goes for podcast. My biggest hurdle has been time, though. After 6-8 hours of editing, I find it tough to want to spend more time in a DAW. Not because I don’t want to learn more, but because my eyes and ears can only handle so much of that per day.
However, I’m starting to do a deep dive into EQ because it’s one of those things I’ve used frequently when mixing podcasts, but I don’t know enough about it to feel like I’m using it to it’s full potential.
Despite not having as much time to go down massive rabbit holes, I found enough of a spark to want to really dig in and improve my audio skills. The funny thing is, podcasts had nothing to do with the spark.
I’ve been thinking a lot about what the next steps are for myself as a freelancer. A lot of the editing I do is relatively basic and with the growing number of AI tools, I know I need to expand my skillset. And it was actually movies that got me thinking about what I should focus on: sound design and crafting stories.
With the holidays coming up, I’ll actually have some time off and can just jump in to learning new skills and improving upon my current ones. Admittedly, it had been a minute since I was truly excited about something in this way. But my curiosity about sound design in film helped me realize that I’d love to do editing that is more intense and involved.
So, it’s time for me to go back to some of the basics of mixing and start honing those skills that will allow me to start taking the next step in this podcast journey.
